All ACSM certifications (CPT, GEI, EP, CEP) are valid for three years. Recertification requires completing continuing education credits (CECs) and maintaining a current CPR/AED certification. Starting in 2027, first aid training will also be required for all ACSM certifications.
All ACSM certification exams use a scaled scoring system ranging from 200 to 800, with a consistent passing threshold of 550. This scaled score approach ensures equitable evaluation across different exam forms.
Effective July 10, 2025, all ACSM certification exams were updated to align with the 12th edition of ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (GETP 12). The updates were based on 2024 Job Task Analyses and emphasize client communication and interdisciplinary teamwork.
The Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist (RCEP) credential was consolidated into the ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP) in 2018. All RCEP holders were transitioned to the unified ACSM-CEP certification.
Yes, all ACSM certification exams can be taken in-person at a Pearson VUE testing center or online-proctored from home, office, or workplace. Candidates may attempt each exam up to four times within a 12-month period, with a mandatory 15-day waiting period between failed attempts.
Starting August 15, 2027, ACSM-EP candidates must hold a bachelor's degree from a CAAHEP-accredited program. ACSM-CEP candidates must also graduate from CAAHEP-accredited programs for both the bachelor's and master's degree pathways. Graduates before that date can still test under the current requirements.
