Most Microsoft certification exams cost $165 USD. Fundamentals exams are also $165 USD. Prices may vary by country. Microsoft occasionally offers discounts, and free exam vouchers are sometimes included with Microsoft Ignite or Build event registrations.
Fundamentals certifications do not expire. Role-based (Associate and Expert) certifications are valid for one year. You can renew them for free by passing a shorter online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn before the expiration date.
Certifications are broad, role-based credentials earned by passing proctored exams. Applied Skills are task-based credentials that validate the ability to perform specific real-world activities such as configuring Fabric workloads or building Power Platform solutions. Applied Skills complement certifications but do not replace them.
For cloud professionals, start with AZ-900 (Azure Fundamentals). For security careers, begin with SC-900. For data and analytics, start with DP-900. For business applications and automation, PL-900 is the entry point. The new AB-900 is recommended for those focused on Microsoft 365 Copilot and AI agents.
DP-203 (Azure Data Engineer Associate) was retired March 31, 2025 and replaced by DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer Associate). DP-500 (Azure Enterprise Data Analyst Associate) was retired April 30, 2024 and replaced by DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate). Both new exams focus on Microsoft Fabric.
