These three certifications form AHLEI's management career ladder. CHS (Certified Hospitality Supervisor) is for front-line supervisors with 90+ days overseeing staff. CHM (Certified Hospitality Manager) is for assistant managers and managers with 6+ months in position. CHA (Certified Hotel Administrator) is the flagship executive credential for general managers and senior executives. Each higher credential reduces the time-in-position requirement for the next level.
AHLEI certifications must be renewed every 5 years. You can either retake the certification exam (70% passing, 75% for CLSD) or earn recertification points. Full-time employment in a qualifying position earns 8 points per year. Additional points come from completing graduate/undergraduate courses (5 points each), AHLEI distance learning courses (5 points), industry workshops (3 points), earning another AHLEI certification (5 points), or serving as an association board member (5 points per year).
AHLEI offers three progressive security certifications: CLSO (Certified Lodging Security Officer) is a 5-hour learning suite for frontline security staff covering safety protocols, active assailant response, and human trafficking awareness. CLSS (Certified Lodging Security Supervisor) is a 125-question exam for supervisors overseeing security teams. CLSD (Certified Lodging Security Director) is a 150-question exam with a higher 75% passing threshold for property-level or corporate security directors.
No. CRME (Certified Revenue Management Executive) and CHDM (Certified Hospitality Digital Marketer) are offered by HSMAI (Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International). CHIA (Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics) transitioned from AHLEI to STR exclusively in January 2024. AHLEI's own sales credential is the CHSP (Certified Hospitality Sales Professional).
AHLEI exams are delivered online through ExamFlex proctoring. When ready to take the exam, candidates contact AHLEI's Certification Department to arrange proctoring. Approved proctors include a CHA, CHT, CLSD holder, a hospitality educator, an AHLA member association executive, the candidate's immediate supervisor, or a member of the clergy.
