Everything you need to know about our ASQ prep materials.
Yes, all ASQ certification exams are open-book. Candidates may bring their own bound reference materials, including notes, textbooks, and handbooks. Materials must be permanently bound (ring binders, spiral binders, etc.) -- loose or hand-stapled documents are not permitted. Post-It notes are allowed only as book tabs.
ASQ exams are offered six times per year in alternating bimonthly testing windows (one group in Jan/Mar/May/Jul/Sep/Nov and another in Feb/Apr/Jun/Aug/Oct/Dec). Exams are delivered via computer-based testing at Prometric test centers worldwide or through live remote proctoring from home. The Certified Master Black Belt (CMBB) is the only certification that does not support remote proctoring.
The Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) received a new Body of Knowledge effective January 2025, adding software/firmware reliability topics. The Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) will transition to a new BoK starting with the April 2026 testing window. The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) will adopt a new BoK starting with the July 2026 testing window.
ASQ certifications require recertification every 3 years. You must earn 18 Recertification Units (RUs) during each 3-year cycle through qualifying activities such as continuing education, professional employment, and volunteering. Alternatively, you can retake the certification exam. There is a 60-day grace period after your recertification date to submit your journal; after that, you must recertify by exam within 1 year or your certification expires.
ASQ uses a scaled scoring system with scores ranging from 0 to 750. A minimum scaled score of 550 is required to pass all ASQ certification exams. The scaled score accounts for exam difficulty variations across different test forms, so the number of correct answers needed may vary slightly between exam versions.
Yes, ASQ members save approximately $100 on initial exam application fees compared to non-member pricing. For example, the CQE exam costs $269 for members versus $419 for non-members. ASQ membership costs approximately $179 per year. Starting January 6, 2026, all certification exam prices increased by 4%.
