IAPP offers eight active certifications: five CIPP regional concentrations (US, Europe, Canada, Asia, China) for jurisdiction-specific privacy law, CIPM for privacy program management, CIPT for privacy technology, and AIGP for AI governance. The FIP (Fellow of Information Privacy) is a senior designation awarded to professionals holding CIPP plus CIPM or CIPT with demonstrated experience.
Core IAPP exams (CIPP, CIPM, CIPT) contain 90 multiple-choice questions (75 scored, 15 unscored pretest items) with a 2.5-hour time limit including a 15-minute break. The AIGP exam has 100 questions with a 2.75-hour limit. All exams use scaled scoring from 100 to 500, with 300 as the passing threshold. Exams are delivered via Pearson VUE at over 6,000 test centers worldwide or remotely through OnVUE.
First-time exam fees are $550 for CIPP, CIPM, and CIPT certifications. The AIGP exam costs $799 for non-members or $649 for IAPP members. Retake or additional certification exams are discounted to $375 ($475 for AIGP). IAPP membership ($50-$295/year depending on status) provides exam discounts and waives the biennial $250 certification maintenance fee.
IAPP certifications are valid for two years from the date of passing. To maintain certification, holders must earn 20 continuing privacy education (CPE) credits corresponding to their certification's Body of Knowledge and either pay a $250 certification maintenance fee or maintain active IAPP membership, which waives this fee.
The CIPP/G certification was retired on October 1, 2018. IAPP continues to offer U.S. Government Privacy training content as a standalone course, but it no longer leads to a separate certification. Government privacy professionals typically pursue the CIPP/US, which covers federal privacy laws including those applicable to government agencies.
