Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about our ISC prep materials.

What is the difference between CISSP CAT and linear exam formats?

CISSP, CCSP, SSCP, and CC use Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT), which dynamically adjusts question difficulty based on your responses. The exam ends when your ability is estimated with 95% confidence, so question count varies (e.g., 100-150 for CISSP). Other ISC2 exams like CGRC, CSSLP, and the CISSP concentrations (ISSAP, ISSEP, ISSMP) use a fixed linear format with exactly 125 questions.

How much does the CISSP exam cost?

The CISSP exam costs $749 USD. Other ISC2 exams such as CCSP, CGRC, CSSLP, and the concentrations (ISSAP, ISSEP, ISSMP) cost $599 USD each. The SSCP costs $249 USD. The CC exam is available for free through ISC2's One Million Certified in Cybersecurity program, or $199 USD otherwise. All certified members pay an Annual Maintenance Fee of $135 (or $50 for CC-only holders).

What experience is required for CISSP certification?

CISSP requires five years of cumulative, paid, full-time work experience in two or more of the eight CISSP domains. A four-year college degree or an approved credential from ISC2's list can substitute for one year of experience. Candidates who pass the exam but lack the full experience can become Associates of ISC2 and have up to six years to earn the required experience.

What happened to the HCISPP certification?

ISC2 determined that HCISPP no longer met the criteria to remain a certification program. The last exam date was December 1, 2023, and the credential will be designated inactive on December 1, 2026. ISC2 recommends the CC certification or Healthcare Certificates as alternatives for healthcare security professionals.

How do I maintain my ISC2 certification?

ISC2 certifications require earning Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits annually and paying the Annual Maintenance Fee ($135/year, or $50/year for CC-only). CISSP holders must earn 40 CPEs per year (120 over three years). SSCP and CC holders need 20 CPEs per year (60 over three years). CPE credits can be earned through training, conferences, publications, and volunteer work.
