ITIL Version 5 launched in February 2026 with a new Foundation module. ITIL 4 and Version 5 will coexist for approximately 12 months. ITIL 4 Foundation holders can take a 30-minute Bridge exam to transition to Version 5. ITIL 4 Foundation remains a valid prerequisite for all advanced ITIL certifications during the transition period.
You must pass ITIL 4 Foundation plus four modules: Create, Deliver and Support (CDS), Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV), High-Velocity IT (HVIT), and Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI). Each module exam has 40 questions with a 90-minute time limit and requires a 70% passing score.
The Practice Manager designation requires ITIL 4 Foundation, the CDS module, and either one bundled specialist module (MSF, PIC, or CAI covering 5 practices each) or five individual Practitioner certifications. Bundled exams have 60 questions in 90 minutes with a 65% pass mark. Individual practice exams have 20 questions in 30 minutes.
Yes, since January 2023 all PeopleCert ITIL 4 certifications must be renewed every three years. Renewal can be done by retaking the exam, collecting CPD points through PeopleCert Plus (MyAxelos), or earning further ITIL certifications before the renewal date. ITIL v3 certifications do not expire and do not require renewal.
Extension Modules are standalone specialist certifications covering emerging topics: Sustainability in Digital and IT, Acquiring and Managing Cloud Services, and Business Relationship Management. They have no formal prerequisites and are 40-question, 90-minute exams. They do not count toward the MP, SL, or PM designations but provide targeted specialist knowledge.
